About Us
The Jumava Publishing House started the business for seventeen years ago, at that time occupying only a tiny room. Today, the company is one of the largest publishing houses in Latvia offering wide choice of books and having its bookstores spread all over the country.
From a humble grey booklet we have grown to albums de luxe, bulky dictionaries and encyclopaedias, observable translations and Latvian fiction editions, useful practical literature, qualitative special literature and most exciting children books. The Jumava Publishing House has become a solid team, and the results of its work – visual and polygraphic harmony and quality – are regularly awarded ‘The Most Beautiful Book’ prize.
Tradition and innovation have always been the driving forces of the Jumava, and they still are – especially after our accession to the European Union which has given us new opportunities for cooperation, publicity and alignment with the international market.
Traditionally, the Jumava Publishing House has had a close cooperation with well-known and beloved Latvian writers – Ēriks Hānbergs, Elita Veidemane, Jānis Peters, Māra Zālīte, Alberts Bels, Monika Zīle, Imants Ziedonis – who come to the readers through their new writings.
Another tradition is publishing the world-famous writer books that enrich the bookshelf of every literature fancier. Among such works are those by Albert Camus, John Irving, J.J. Salinger, Johannes Mario Zimmel, J.R.R.Tolkien, Erich Maria Remarque. Of course, this list would not be comprehensive without naming the new series of phantasy literature - books about the brave girl Laura and Harry Potter. The Harry Potter Fan Club has now 3000 members from all around Latvia, and they take active part in various club activities.
One of the most successful news in the Jumava Publishing House this – is series of souvenir-books, already noticed and appreciated by our readers. One can find both poetry and sententious sayings on love, friends and human life.
We have also widened and varied our guidebook offer. Riga, Ventspils, Cēsis, Daugavpils, Rūjiena, Liepāja, Jelgava, Sigulda the Legend-laden Castles of Latvia, Riga Art Nouveau, Cultural Parallels between Riga and Florence... Information on geography, history and culture of all these famous sightseeing places is given in both Latvian and English.
The Jumava Publishing House takes pride in publishing unique works of heritage value. History of Latvia: the 20th century, Latvian National Theatre and Magnus, the Danish prince (by R.Dobrovenskis) – these are books that comprise an extensive historical material and have an excellent visual design.
Several successful projects have been run in cooperation with our partners and supporters – and we are planning to cooperate with them in future projects as well. Here, we must mention stock corporation Latvijas Gāze, state stock corporation Latvijas Dzelzceļš, CSDD (Latvian Road Safety Board), stock corporation Hansabanka, stock corporation Parekss Banka, the Foundation of the University of Latvia, Whirlpool Latvia Ltd., RBS Skals Ltd. and many others.
In the course of time, the publishers of Latvia have changed. Editions of our publishing house change, so does edition design and ourselves. Nevertheless, we still consider literature to be an aesthetic and intellectual value, and we have always been allegiant to the principle of providing our reader with the best and widest literature offer because the books of the Jumava Publishing House are the true value of your time!
